CIUDAD AZUL, VINCIDORIA

Knight approached the quiet airport, which, like many places beyond Los Colinas, seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. Surrounded by an old fence, private security maintained the perimeter, the entrance offering no sign of police or the Army. The airport had just one runway and a single hangar, likely containing several light aircraft similar to the twin-propeller plane on the tarmac.

He eased the car he had borrowed from Isabella and drove it to the checkpoint. A guard got up from his chair inside the sentry box and stepped out, gesturing for Knight to wind down his window.

“Good morning,” he greeted the chubby Vincidorian man.

A second guard, much fitter than the first, walked from the sentry box with a clipboard in hand. “Do you have a booking today?”

“Ah, no, not exactly,” Knight admitted. “But I was hoping to book a flight. Any chance there’s an opening?”

The guard checked his paperwork, then met Knight with an apologetic shake of the head. “We’re fully booked.”

Knight peered out at the dormant airstrip gleaming in the morning sun, his fingers remaining on the grip of his concealed gun by the door. “That’s a shame. Looks like a perfect day for flying, doesn’t it?”

He put his other hand in his pocket and took out a folded stash of Vincidorian currency, extending it through the window to the nearest guard. Both stared at the bribe, their eyes doing little to hide their joy. A brief exchange with one another was all it required for the clipboard to get tucked away and the boom gate lifted.

“Follow the signs to the parking lot,” the portly guard instructed him, hiding the cash in his pocket. “If you head into the flight room, you should find someone there who can help.”

Knight smiled and drove the car through the entry, taking the car to the parking lot. He shut off the engine and stepped out, making his way to the door to the small building nearby. Inside, a group of men sat around tables, their laughter and banter echoing off the walls. Stories from years past and jokes filled the air in what appeared to be something of a daily ritual.

No one saw him enter. He cleared his throat, and suddenly a hush fell over the space. Every pair of eyes in the flight room settled on him, the jovial moods evaporating at his arrival.

“I’m after passage,” he announced.

No one uttered a word. Knight, having no time for pleasantries, walked to the nearest pilot, a rugged man with a bushy beard in his mid-fifties. “Can you take me where I need to go?”

The pilot shrugged. “It all depends. Where do you want to go?”

Knight opened his jacket and revealed a flight plan he had put together. He handed it over, and the pilot studied it.

The man’s curiosity soured quickly. “You want me to fly over the Colombian border?”

“Is that a problem?”

“It will be when I get shot down.”
